NORTH AMERICA'S LARGEST SEED HATCHERY
To meet the increasing demand for high quality seed of various shellfish species (including clams, oysters, and mussels), Coast has recently completed construction of a hatchery and seed grow out site on the big island of Hawaii. Operations began in January, 1998. Our site is located at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) in Kona, Hawaii.

Features include:

  1. An 8 acre site with 200 upwells, 20 - 4' x 4' flow through boxes, larvae tanks, algae tanks and ponds producing more than sufficient algae per day to meet an annual production of 250 million seed. This site has extensive room for further expansion.

  2. Perennial sunshine that provides the solar energy to grow the algae necessary without extensive power costs.

  3. Surface seawater (24-27° C) and deep seawater (7-10° C) provide an ability to utilize high volumes of pristine seawater at low cost.

  4. The island of Hawaii and the NELHA site serves as one of the most remote and natural quarantine facilities in the world, making it possible to handle a wide variety of shellfish species.

  5. NELHA is one of the few sites in the world that allows a 12 month per year operation with minimal fluctuations in climate change, thus allowing production and shipment year round.

  6. Coast's NELHA location is in close proximity to both Asian and North and South American markets. The Keahole International Airport is only minutes from our site.

  7. Seed can be sized to customer specifications ranging from 1410 screen size (2-3 mm) to 3600 screen size (6-8 mm). Larger size may be available upon request.
